A legal document issued by a carrier to a shipper that details the type, quantity, and destination of the goods being carried.
The Bill of Lading (B/L) is arguably the most important document in international trade and ocean freight. It serves three primary functions: 1) A receipt of cargo (proof that the carrier has received the goods), 2) A contract of carriage between the shipper and the carrier, and 3) A document of title (ownership) of the goods. If an original B/L is issued, the buyer must physically present this original document to the carrier at the destination port to release the cargo. Alternatively, an Express Release (Sea Waybill) or Telex Release can be used to release cargo digitally without original documents.
