A penalty fee charged when an empty container is not returned to the shipping line's depot within the allotted free time after unloading.
Detention is the daily fee charged by the shipping line for keeping an empty container outside the port/terminal beyond the allotted free time. After a full container is picked up from the port and unloaded at the consignee's warehouse, the empty box must be returned to the carrier's designated depot. If the return exceeds the free period (usually 3-7 days), detention charges apply. This is distinct from Demurrage, which is the charge for a full container sitting inside the port terminal.
