A standard unit of measurement used to describe the capacity of container ships and container terminals, based on the volume of a standard 20-foot shipping container.
TEU stands for Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit. It is the industry-standard measurement for container shipping capacity. A standard 20ft container = 1 TEU. A 40ft container = 2 TEU. The world's largest container ships can carry over 24,000 TEU. Port throughput is also measured in TEU handled per year. For example, the Port of Istanbul (Ambarli) handles approximately 3.5 million TEU per year, making it one of the busiest container ports in the Mediterranean region.
